It's Black Maternal Health week. So I'm sharing th It's Black Maternal Health week. So I'm sharing the stories of local women of color.

Jalenia's story...

After having a hospital birth for my first child, a home birth for my second child was a no brainer. During my first pregnancy I was not happy with my experience with my routine doctor visits, labor, or delivery. After doing research I learned that it was not uncommon for a woman of color (or women period) to have negative experiences in the "normal" hospital environments. So deciding and going through with a home birth was like a dream. My midwife, was like a dream.

My home visits felt like catching up with a friend. I felt heard and cared for on a level that goes beyond healthcare. The home visits allowed me to become 100% comfortable with Tanashia and the fact that she was black was the icing on the cake for me. Why? Because this black woman could inherently relate to me. I knew this woman saw me and understood the impact my first birth experience had on me. Tanashia was just a phone call or text away. She never made me feel like I was a bother.

We did a membrane sweep on August 12th at 10AM. Tanashia let me know that I may have cramping throughout the rest of the day and instructed me to rest and hydrate. At 10:30PM I texted her letting her know my contractions were about 4-5 minutes apart and lasting a minute and a half to two minutes. She rushed right over. She instructed me to take a hot shower and to get back in bed. She waited on our couch until 3AM and we decided she would came back if contractions progressed. At 8:13AM my mucus plug came out. At 12:15PM my arms were wrapped around my husband and I gave birth to my precious my baby girl. Kalena was born en caul, meaning she was coming out in an intact amniotic sac. This is rare nowadays because hospitals often rush the labor by breaking the water. (Continues in comments)

Tatianna's story.....

Being a first-time mom, I’ve always heard horror stories of how African American women are treated during labor and delivery. When I was going to my OB/GYN I felt rushed. I did not connect with the doctor. After my second appointment, I decided to switch to a homebirth.

My midwife was amazing. She understood my concerns as a first-time mom. She provided me with so much information from books, to pamphlets and also a video called "Why Not Home" to watch. My monthly prenatal care was in the comfort of my home. My midwife did not rush my appointments. She checked my vitals and my baby heartbeat and growth. If I needed any blood work or test completed, she would do them with ease, and drop everything off to the labs for me. If I had any concerns she followed up with me immediately. During labor and delivery, she made sure I ate to keep my energy going and also, she made sure I stayed hydrated. My Midwife showed me different positions to labor in. When I felt like giving up, she encouraged me to keep going. When my baby girl entered the world, my sweet midwife caught her and placed her in my arms. She checked her vitals, length and weight. My midwife helped me shower, eat, changed my sheets, and even did laundry. She made sure I was settled before she left. She also provided postpartum care. she followed up with 48hrs, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks after delivery. She monitored my blood pressure to ensure I didn’t have postpartum preeclampsia. If I needed anything in between time, she was a call away. I did not have one worry while in her care. I will definitely have another homebirth.

Baby Maddy was born gently, safely, & at home!

Gabby's Birth Story:

We chose to have our 5th child at home simply because it was the best choice for us. In our past births we experienced so much negativity, unnecessary pain and lack of compassion (in the hospital). So a home birth based on what we wanted was perfect.

Our midwife was heaven sent. Prenatal visits were painless and fun. She made us feel so comfortable. It felt like sitting down with a close friend who just so happens to check your blood pressure. She allowed me to have a birth plan, which was foreign to me. We are grateful to have found someone who looks like me. Someone who could understand my past experiences and treat us like we were relevant. Her technique and positivity are unmatched.

My labor was so easy compared to the 4 others. I woke up to get the kids ready for school while having light contractions. As soon as I got them out the door my husband felt like the contractions were different so he call our midwife she RACED over. I labored in our birthing room and then the bathroom. Not much time went by and our baby girl was here. My water did not break. She was born inside her amniotic sac (en caul) which I never thought would happen, but it was such an amazing experience. Postpartum was as easy as the birth. My midwife made me aware of techniques I never knew about. So Postpartum was a breeze. In short, I would definitely recommend anyone who has had a horrible birth experience to choose home birth. It's safe. It's freeing. And it's the most natural way to bring your beautiful baby into this world.

Baby Harmony was born gently, safely, & at home!
